A Quilt for My Marine

Do something you love and understand

This is a special quilt for Cole.  I’m so proud of my son.  He knew he wanted to be a Marine at age eight.  As a mother it’s hard to know he may be in harms way.  He’s my baby, not a soldier.  When he left this fall it was a wakeup call for me to realize he was grown up and off to live his life.  The hardest part of being a parent is letting your children grow up, but I’ll try.

This quilt is my way of telling him I love and support him.  I couldn’t be prouder of him and everything he has accomplished in such a short time.

This quilt was made out of my scrap bins and a few stash fabrics.  The strips are each 1.5 inches wide.  My original plan was to make it using the quilt as you go method.  Unfortunately the backing got lost in the mail.  Since I was on a deadline to get it done before he came home on boot leave I had to change what I was doing and just piece them together like normal.

It came out perfect… until I went to quilt it.  I had a lot of warping going on. I ended up quilting most of it and then pulling every quilting stitch out because it wasn’t perfect.  It’s so frustrating to see your perfect piecing getting ruined.  I was so frustrated that I brought it to a professional long arm quilter.  My first time ever giving one of my quilts to someone else to quilt.  They were so nice they did it right away so I would have it when I needed it.  I had them do loops and stars on it. I’m so glad I went with that. They are perfect!

Then I did something out of my comfort zone… I made a red, white and blue binding! I love the way it finished off this quilt!
